THERE is a time and a place for everything and selling your beloved Porsche is no exception. Just as there are good months to buy or sell a house, the same applies to your car.
Got a stunning Porsche 911 or a Porsche Cayman? Then summer is traditionally the best time to sell your Porsche. The sun is out, people feel good and buying a rugged 4×4 is the last thing on anyone’s mind. Literally, watch the price rise alongside the temperature.
Porsche Boxsters also do better on the used car market in the summer, although if you’re really organised, get in there early and get yours ready for sale in the spring just as people are starting to think a convertible would be great for the balmy summer days and nights ahead.
If it’s a Porsche Macan or Porsche Cayenne – look towards the autumn to get the best deal. Colder weather raises the prospect of snow and ice and people start to think buying an all-wheel drive vehicle or SUV is a great idea. Demand pushes up prices and you’ll soon find a buyer for your vehicle.
And it goes without saying, avoid Christmas and New Year at all costs. Everyone will be out shopping for turkey and tinsel – or completely out of spare cash!
So you’ve picked the season to sell, now what do you do? That all depends on whether you want to sell privately, to an official Porsche Centre or to a dealer.
The most demanding of the three is the private sale option. You are literally responsible for everything, from taking sales photos and preparing the car, to buying and placing an advert and then making sure you get the agreed price and the money for your car.
You’ll need to know the value when selling your Porsche so you pitch at the right price and that means doing your homework. These days a quick internet search can help you compare what’s already out there on the market and it’s vital you know what your car is worth. You can have the best advert in the world with show-stopping photos and a full service history, but set the price too high and you won’t get a single bite.
If your car is over three years old, a long MoT is an attractive option to many buyers and if they’re parting with supercar money, they will also want all the paperwork to go with the price tag – the V5c goes without saying, but MOT certificates, service records, maintenance receipts all help to add value and improve your chances of a quick sale.
Your car needs to be clean, both inside and out. Nothing says unloved, not maintained or not cared for than a dirty car. It’s definitely worth going the extra mile to get it professionally valeted, especially when you’re selling a prestigious piece of Germany’s finest automotive engineering.
Never hand over the keys or documents until the money from the buyer is safely in your hands and avoid overseas buyers if you can. Once the money has been paid, don’t forget to write out a basic receipt – the AA recommends you include a simple statement along the lines of “sold as seen, tried and approved without guarantee” as added protection should something go wrong in the future. Both you and the buyer should sign and retain a copy each.
The final step is notifying the DVLA that your car has been sold. You can even do that online now at https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle
However, if you’ve got a real Porsche Classic on your hands then an official Porsche Centre is a good bet. Any Porsche over ten years of age is deemed to be a classic in the eyes of Porsche and they will be able to give you an indicative value within 24 hours just by submitting a few details to your local centre.
From there they will invite you for a full, no-obligation professional appraisal for a fully accurate appraisal. And there’s a huge demand for good quality pre-owned Porsches so this option is well worth considering.
A clean car and the right paperwork is just as crucial as if you were selling privately. You also need to know the price your looking for. A Porsche Centre is a great option for a good deal if you’re part-exchanging for another Porsche, but if you’re just looking to sell, then you should consider other dealers, some are specialists, others trade in all marques, from supercars to small family hatchbacks.
You might not get quite as much money than if you sold privately, but this is, without a doubt, the hassle-free option with no risk of having your precious time wasted by ‘tyre-kickers’ or those who have big dreams but not the money to match.
You turn up at the dealership or fill out an online form, they quote you a price and, once the paperwork is signed, the money is instantly transferred into your account. Simple. There is no risk of a cheque bouncing or a disgruntled buyer turning up on your doorstep a month later.
It’s also a great way to ensure a superfast sale to match your superfast supercar – no-one is going to want to buy a top end Porsche 911 Gen2 997 GT3 without knowing it’s been fully inspected and that it’s 100 per cent genuine. Buyers want the reassurance they get from purchasing from a dealer which means dealers want to buy your car.
So get canny with the calendar, choose the best time to sell your Porsche depending on the model then decide whether it’s worth the hassle of selling privately to gain a few extra Pounds. Dealers offer speed, efficiency and absolute peace of mind, which means that when the deal is done, it’s done.
